“What is a weekend?” Who said that?
Dowager. What does the word mean?
The Boer War. Where and when did it happen?
These were among the issues hashed out during the March 28 Downton Abbey Party thrown jointly by the library and English teacher Carol Miller. The gala event, held in the library and attended by around 50 guests, featured a Scone Smackdown (in which scones were ranked not by grade or number, but rather by narrative observations), a pub-quiz style trivia contest, and, of course, high tea. A good time was had by all and much mingling of the school’s social strata was achieved.
[Answers: The What is a Weekend question was posed by Violet Crowley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, played by Maggie Smith; a dowager is a woman who holds a title or property derived from her deceased husband; The Boer Wars (there were two) took place in South Africa between 1880 and 1902.]
