Mock Newbery Gathering

interschoolmocknewbery-650

Nearly 60 students from three neighborhood schools joined more than 20 from Saint Ann’s on Friday, November 6 to discuss our favorite Newbery contenders of the year. We watched book trailers, recommended titles to each other, and worked with students from Brooklyn Friends, Brooklyn Heights Montessori, and Packer to answer trivia questions about past Newbery winners. (Do you know which two Newbery medal/honor winners feature main characters named Turtle? Or which two Lois Lowry books have won Newbery medals? Ask a Mock Newbery Committee member!)

Current shared titles among the four schools include Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate, The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, George by Alex Gino, Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan, The Marvels by Brian Selznick, and Gone Crazy in Alabama by Rita Williams-Garcia, among others. Saint Ann’s 4th, 5th, and 6th grade book lovers have been meeting biweekly since September, and will continue to meet until the Newbery is announced in January. We will vote for finalists before Thanksgiving… stay tuned!
